What I don't do.
I do not give advice. I do not have a roadmap for your life. I do not know what God is telling you, and I do not pretend to. I will not try to bring you to my theological conclusions.
I do not do therapy. If we touch on something that belongs in therapy, I will say so and, with your permission, gently encourage you to find a good clinician. The two practices live well together; they are not the same.
I do not solve. We may sit with a question for a long time without arriving at anything tidy. The work of spiritual direction is mostly not about arriving.
I do not promise that anything will get easier. Sometimes things do. Sometimes the work of attention asks more of you, not less, before it asks less.
What I do is sit with you. Listen. Occasionally name what I am hearing. Pray for you between our times together. Trust that the Spirit is the real director, and that my best service to you is to stay out of the way.
It is a small offering. It has, in my experience, been quietly transformative for the people who come.
